Station D2

Second sanctuary D 2

The second sanctuary is a passage room with four doors, leaving little space for decoration. In the first register of the north wall on either side of the doorway are two hippopotamus-like goddesses with a crocodile tail on their backs and whose feet are lion’s paws. Each of these composite goddesses is a representative of one of the twelve Egyptian months. In the second register the paws and the tip of the crocodile tail can still be seen. Originally there were three registers.

In the base (soubassement) on each side are the king and several Nile gods, who can be recognized by the marsh-plants on their heads. On the eastern side they present trays bearing a figure who offers four vessels filled with ointment and myrrh, while on the western side, they present trays with figures who offer different clothes.
