Station K2

Rear chapel K 2

Behind the naos there were originally three chapels that were only accessible from the rear of the temple. Today the western chapel is completely destroyed. The one in the middle along the axis of the temple is only half preserved. Presumably, visitors came from the northern door at the back of the temple. Since many Greek visitor inscriptions were found in the colonnade which could also be reached by the northern door, one can assume this back part of the temple was open to a larger public than the interior, which was reserved for the priests.

This room shows two remarkable reliefs. The first one is in the base (soubassement) of the north wall just at the entrance. It shows a leopard, a dwarf-like Bes and a giraffe. All three are representatives of the incense land Punt which was of great importance in the temple of Athribis.

On the east wall the king presents two bags of eye paints to Min-Re. Behind him is a falcon standing on a podium. His name is not preserved but presumably it is the second child-god of Athribis Horus-Senedjem-ib: “Horus, who delights the heart“.
